The Last Apprentice:
Attack of the Movie Rumors

We’re human (contrary to popular belief). So when we heard rumors that one of our favorite Greenwillow series might make it to the big screen, against our better judgment, we got excited. Okay, really excited.

The Last Apprentice series has been under option with Warner Brothers for several years now, but nothing much had been happening with it. In the meantime, we couldn’t help but fantasize about our dream casting. Who should play Old Gregory, the Spook? Morgan Freeman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan…Justin Bieber?

And how about young Tom, the apprentice? Freddie Highmore, Will Poulter, or Joe Jonas?

We dreamed…and then a few months ago—BAM! Reality!

So far, there’s been press about the director, Sergey Bodrov (Mongol), and the possible casting of Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four), Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), and Jeff Bridges (!!!) as Tom, Alice, and the Spook. Supposedly, the movie is slotted to release sometime next year.

First of all, everyone needs to breathe. You know how these things go. You get your hopes up only to have them buried like so many boggarts in a pit. (Lined with salt and lead, of course. Those hopes aren’t getting out anytime soon.) So, do as we do, take it one day at a time. The movie may come, or it may not. In the meantime, listen to the lilting tones of Joseph Delaney and Patrick Arrasmith, reread the books, polish your silver witch-catching chain, and think happy thoughts.

Or, if you’re hardcore fans like these guys, you can just go ahead and make the movie yourself.

  2. Tim Smith says:

So I guess the commentariat only goes into a teeth-gnashing rage when *I* jokingly mention Justin Bieber . . . NOTED.

For the record, I think Jonathan Goldsmith (the “most interesting man in the world”) should play John Gregory; UConn backup quarterback Johnny McEntee should be Tom Ward (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0WMd0Y6hIw); Blake Lively should be Alice; and Susanna Hoffs should be Tom’s mom. Have at it.
