Hooray for Anita Lobel!

I’ve been to the perfectly wonderful NCCIL twice before, once with Kevin Henkes and once with Peter Sís, and I was thrilled to return late last week for the gala celebration and gallery opening in honor of Anita Lobel. I was a surprise guest—as was Susan Hirschman, Betty Carter, Kathi Appelt, and Leslie Tetreault and Ginger Shuler (Kevin Henkes was supposed to be a surprise for Anita, too, but his flight was cancelled due to extreme fog, so he missed complimentary drinks at the Inn Eleganté as well as a whole lot of other stuff). “Some people followed me off the plane!” announced Lori Benton (who helped Anita select paintings for the show and was her official escort for the event). Anita was surprised—and so happy!

The Anita Lobel exhibit is spectacular and includes works from many of her books as well as some fabric designs from early in her career and some large and gorgeous personal paintings of flowers.

Margaritas the size of your heads.
Armadillos the size of a house.
And Anita who is larger than life!

Clearly, everything really is bigger in Texas.

  2. Anita managed to show her talents in the works and demonstrate the result to the public. This really impressed many of the visitors.
