Lynne Rae Perkins was in the office recently to work on the dummy for a new picture book. The story was written by Esmé Raji Codell and it is about Johnny Appleseed. Sylvie, Lynne Rae, and I spent two pizza-and-caffeine-fueled days talking about the pictures, the type design, the pacing, and the pagination. And whether or not Johnny Appleseed actually wore a pot on his head. It was heaven. Lynne Rae’s finished art for this book will include images made from fabric, wood, antiquarian books, and maps. And perhaps . . . feathers? Here’s a sneak peek!

the art is gorgeous!
I cannot WAIT for this book to come out! I’ve seen the dummy and it is fantastic. Definitely Caldecott material, just saying.
